Eddie Olczyk called Patrick Kane's games in Chicago for 16 seasons, left the Blackhawks broadcast booth in a 2022 contract dispute, and is now at TNT and Seattle. When Kane signed a two-year deal to come home July 23, Edzo's public reaction was four words: it just feels right. He won't be in the booth to call it.

Patrick Kane signed a two-year, $8 million AAV contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 23 — a reunion three years and a full arc of hip surgery, Rangers limbo, and three productive Detroit seasons in the making. The number was confirmed by the team and reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Before the news cycle had time to settle, Eddie Olczyk weighed in.

Olczyk — "Edzo" to every Blackhawks fan who watched the dynasty run — called Kane's games in the Chicago broadcast booth for 16 seasons. He was there when Kane took the 2007 Calder Trophy, there for three Stanley Cup runs, and there in 2015–16 when Kane eclipsed the 18-game consecutive point-scoring streak Olczyk himself had set with Pittsburgh back in 1989–90. It was the kind of shared hockey history that doesn't require elaboration. In a video published July 24, the title said everything: It just feels right.

What Edzo doesn't have is a seat in the booth to call Kane's return. He left the Blackhawks broadcast team in July 2022 after contract talks broke down — the Kraken offered longer term than the Wirtz organization would, and he took it. "We just could not come to terms on a contract," Olczyk said at the time, "and I have decided to step away." He's been a national NHL analyst for TNT and part of the Seattle Kraken's local crew since, with a fifth Olympic assignment at Milan Cortina 2026 on top of that. The Blackhawks replaced him with Darren Pang on Chicago Sports Network.

The fans ABC7 Chicago caught outside the United Center on July 24 sounded like the Reddit thread that surfaced Olczyk's reaction: nostalgia, dynasty recall, the electric crowd again. Home opener against the Blues is October 6; the cheapest third-party seats were already pushing $200 before the weekend.

Edzo knows what that building sounds like when Kane is on the ice. He won't be calling it this time — but four words still landed right.
